\f0\fs21 \cf0 Dear Student:\
The work you have submitted for EXAMINATION 00786800,
\i The Writing Skills Writing Assignment
\i0 in your
\b Written Communication
\b0 course, is being returned without a grade for the reason(s) checked below.
\f1 \
\pard\pardeftab709\li720\fi-720\ri0\sl276\slmult1\sa200

\f0 \cf0 _____	Your essay is too short. Your paper must be at least 750 words long (approximately three pages typed and double-spaced). Look for places where you can include specific examples to support what you are saying. Your goal as a writer is to SHOW your reader what you are going through. Do not merely list information about your topic, but guide your reader through the experience you are discussing. (Please also review the information below.)\
_____	Your essay does not fully represent a composition whose content is completely and uniquely yours. It contains too much factual information. You do not use \cf2 enough material\cf0 from your first-hand knowledge and experience with the topic. Even if you are writing an opinion piece, you must explain the reasoning behind your opinion(s) by providing examples from your experience to show how you arrived at your current opinion(s). Doing so also shows your authority to write on your chosen topic.
\f1 \
\pard\pardeftab709\li720\ri0\sl276\slmult1\sa200

\f0 \cf0 Perhaps you felt you needed to research your topic to verify facts or to provide some statistics. This can be a good practice when you are writing an opinion piece and need to fill in a gap of information. However, your essay does not show you using that factual information to support your own ideas or lines of reasoning. When you merely restate or summarize what you have learned through research or when you list factual information, even if it is what you learned from your own experience, you are not providing specific examples showing yourself learning that information. In addition, you are not discussing the information in order to show your original thinking about the topic \'96 how you came to understand what you did not understand before. (Also, remember that you must always provide credit for information taken from somewhere else by citing the source.)\
Using others\'92 opinions in your own words is not proper either, even if you agree with those opinions. Rather, what you write must be based on what you already know and have experienced directly yourself. By showing this experience through specific examples of what happened to you or of what you directly observed happening to family or friends, you provide your own unique, distinctive perspective on the topic.
\f1 \

\f0 Since it is quite difficult to develop original ideas on a topic about which you have little knowledge or with which you have little experience, choose a topic with which you do have experience. Some possible topics are listed on page 50 of the
\i Writing Skills, Part 1
\i0 study unit. \
Next, decide on an original focus or \'93slant\'94 for that topic. For example, if you write about a vacation, state or show, as part of your introductory paragraph, your unique viewpoint on that experience. \'93My vacation to Disneyland provided some of the most exciting times of my life.\'94 If you write an opinion piece about cats, your focus should be something like, \'93I have discovered that cats make more loyal pets than dogs\'94 (but only if you have experience with both species).\
Use your slant or \'93thesis\'94 to guide you in choosing and organizing the details and examples you will include in the essay. Remember not to list events or information, but to describe your experience so that the reader feels that he goes through it with you. Finally, write from your perspective and in your own voice, using the pronoun \'93I\'94.
\f1 \
\pard\pardeftab709\ri0\sl276\slmult1\sa200

\f0 \cf0 Using the information given above, prepare a new assignment and resubmit your work for grading. Be sure to attach the Cover Sheet to your essay, and
\b save a copy of your final draft
\b0 before submitting. Good luck, and be sure to contact an instructor with any questions! \

\fs24 \cf0 You might be thinking to yourself, why would I pick a topic such as Aruba, a Caribbean Island. Well, as I was brainstorming on topics that I might know allot about, I figured that Aruba would be the perfect topic, since I was born and raised on this island. I currently work in the hotel industry which gives me a wider knowledge of Aruba as well. The reason for this topic is because I surprisingly know allot of my island Aruba since I was born and raised here. As a child, my parents owned a jeep tour company called Eagle Tours and man that was the best time ever. Aruba is an island that is located in the Caribbean. Aruba is more or less 17 miles long with a population of more or less 110.000 people. To go from one coast of the island to the other coast of the island will take about 45 minutes by car driving approximately 50 km/u. So you can see as to why I might know allot on Aruba, Aruba is not a big place. Mostly everyone knows everyone here or either their parents know everyone. \
\
On such a small island, we only have one airport which is called Queen Beatrix International Airport. Our airport was named after our Queen from Netherlands, Queen Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard of which as a child, with school we used stand on the side of the street with little Holland flags waving to greet the Queen. When the Queen turns her head in my direction, I just to jump up and down to let her see me and greet me back. Our airport is located in Oranjestad, our capital city. The name Oranjestad is a dutch word and means Orangetown. As you can see, this name is also an dutch influence since holland signature color is orange.\
 \
Aruba's economy depends allot on tourism and our refinery. Those are the two major factors that keeps our island moving forward and to get the income we need to stay on track. About 3 years ago, the previous government tried to close down the Refinery, sending more then 700 employees home. This move effected the whole island and off course, also me. All the prices went up, water, electricity, food, all the cost of living. Due to this, I had to move out of my one bedroom apartment and move in back with my mother so that we all together can make ends meet. We also have an Aloe Factory on Aruba since the climate here is perfect for the Aloe plant. The Aruba Aloe Balm N.V. was founded in 1890. They have product such as Body lotion, Sun lotion & Hair Care products. If you ever happen to come to Aruba, the Aruba Aloe factory provides a FREE tour so you get a peek into the production process of the Aloe products. It is a quiet interesting tour. The will show you from step one, how to plant and then all the way to the final product.\
\
Al thou we are not completely independent, we have our motherland Netherlands that watches our back. For any major decisions, Netherlands is always there to help/intervene. Since Netherlands is our motherland, we all have dutch issued passports so in other words, we are of Dutch nationality. All our school system, government departments, lawyers, Court room rulings, hospitals and nurses, are all in dutch language. The legal system of Aruba is mandatory in dutch. This is due that our motherland is Netherlands and from time to time, if needed, they will intervene and control everything that is happening on the island, since Netherlands at times, helps us financially. So I think they might have the right to have that rule implemented just so that they know where their funds are going to. Other then this, Aruba along with Netherlands provides a college program that allows all locals of Aruba to get the opportunity to go to college in the Netherlands since Aruba does not have colleges. I am currently signed up for this program to go to attend college in September 2012. \
\
We might be of Dutch nationality, but in Aruba you will find our native people : Arubians, such as myself. To be considered a true Arubian, you must have been born and raised here on Aruba and your ancestors, going back 7 generations, must also been born and raised in Aruba and luckily for me, my family tree goes back with more then 10 generations of family members having been born, raised and laid to rest now in Aruba. It is rare that you will find someone with such family background (true Arubian) since in Aruba, we have had and are still having allot immigrants. Other then Arubians, we have allot of immigrants who came and established themselves on Aruba. We vary from Dutch people themselves, Colombians, Venezuelans, Americans, Brazilians, Chinese, Philippines, Dominicans, Mexicans, Haitians who are the largest of their race. Apart from them, we have allot of other races from other places of the world but you don't really see them as often as the above mentioned nationalities.\
\
In Aruba, we have our own language called Papiamento which means 'talking'. Papiamento is not recognized as an official language but as a dialect. Papiamento is actually a mix of about more or less 40 different languages all mixed up into one language / dialect which we know call Papiamento. There is only 3 places in the world, to my knowledge, that speak Papiamento which are Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Al thou at all 3 of these island, the pronunciation and the accent is quiet different making Papiamento sound different at all of these 3 locations. As our ancestors says, each island added their our salt and pepper to Papiamento.\
\
Here in Aruba, everyone that has or is attended school on the island, knows for sure, a total of 4 languages which are Papiamento, Dutch, English and Spanish. I attended a high school in the beginning of which I had to learn French as well. Now a days, French has been ruled out of high school. When starting kinder garden you will be spoken to in Papiamento. Then in preschool, you will be spoken to in Papiamento and start learning dutch words. By the time you reach elementary school, 1\super st\nosupersub grade, everything is in dutch. You will learn to speak and write dutch and learn to count in dutch. By the time you get to 4\super th\nosupersub grade, you will have two extra subjects, English and Spanish. For the rest of your school years until you graduate in Aruba, it will be mandatory for you to take these subjects or you won't pass your grade. \
\
I think since Aruba depends allot on Tourism, it is of allot of importance to have our locals learn these languages in order to provide the proper customer service and together help for our island to succeed. For the people that know about Aruba, they consider Aruba the most wonderful place on earth, or as allot of tourist have told me, Aruba is their home away from home. \
\
Aruba is a calm and relaxing place. All the people here are friendly and treat our tourists as royalty. Aruba's weather is always the same, it is practically sunny everyday and it barely rains. Staring from 7:00 in the morning with a beautiful sunrise and ending with an amazing sunset around 6:30 in the afternoon. I have lived here all my life and still once a week, I take the time to sit and admire the beautiful sunset. Depending on how cloudy it is during the day, when the sun touches the horizon, it creates a sky of beautiful colors. \
\
Aruba has allot to offer to its tourists. The # 1 favorite thing to do for all the visitors of the island, is to go lay on the beautiful white beaches. While sitting on the lounge chairs at the beach with your pi\'f1a colada, you'll be relaxing to the sound of the birds, motor boats and at times, the waves. What is also a favorite of the islands visitors, are the restaurants on the island that serves good food and excellent service. You might wonder why would someone want to visit the same place every year, it is because of the welcoming attitudes of everyone on the island. The way you can feel safe when walking alone in Aruba. Despite all the negative attention that we once had to deal with, Aruba is still the most wonderful place that exist in my opinion. \
\
As I mentioned previously, my parents owned a jeep tour company. As I child, I just to pretend to be sick not to go to school and then talk my dad into letting me go with him on the tour. I loved spending the day with my father and with all the tourists. I'd give anything to go back to those days, best childhood memory.\
\
The tour would start off at \

Since it has been seen as a threat to health, the government decided that it's best to close the cave. Back then, Eagle Tours was one of the first and very successful tour companies. My parents worked their hearts out for this company. Sadly it all came to an end after my parents filed for divorce. Nothing has been the same ever since.\

Their are numbers tour companies that have the same tour as my parents did and are also very successful.
